Analysis / Modeling Applications
Analysis/modeling applications fall roughly into two categories:
- those attempting to deduce meaningful structure
from probabilistic statistical data, and
- those attempting to draw actionable conclusions from such
data.
An example of the first would be to deduce the
structure of a molecular pathway critical to the function
of a candidate cancer drug from microarray expression
data in pharmacogenomics. An example of the second
would be to decide how to structure a financial hedge
that balances the risk associated with a block of investments
in financial analytics.

We have culled out four features of DBMS 3.0™ to highlight:
- direct support for high-level object semantics (S)
- support for probabilistic data
(P)
- support for long-running analysis/modeling
applications (A)
- support for class-specific representations (R)
We have used a 'Consumer-Reports' style presentation to indicate which features of the
DBMS are of most importance to each application: S|P|A|R
As you review the applications you will note that for many applications it is the semantic support
that is key. For other applications it is a combination of analysis
and probabilistic data. For still others it may be the combination of analysis and
class-specific representations.
